Congrats - Uttarakhand New Chief Minister

How Trivendra Rawat pulled ahead of heavyweights on path to power

Trivendra Singh Rawat, the chief minister-designate of Uttarakhand+, is a soft-spoken individual with a penchant for getting things done - a trait that he is believed to have picked up early in life due to his association with the RSS as a pracharak.

Over the years, Rawat won recognition for his administrative and organisational skills. His loyalty to the party and RSS ideology possibly gave him an edge in the race to the top job in Uttarakhand.

Rawat joined the RSS in 1979 as a 19-year-old and steadily rose up the ranks eventually heading the Dehradun unit of the sangh.

He remained active as a pracharak through most of the 1990s.

In 1997, he was made general secretary, organisation, of the state BJP and played an important role in organising the party cadre both in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions.

In 2002, he contested state elections for the first time and won from the Doiwala seat of Dehradun. In 2007, he again won the seat and was made a cabinet minister in the BC Khanduri government and given the agriculture portfolio.

His name featured in a 'seed scam' during this time. It was alleged that the agriculture department under his watch had committed financial irregularities in the procurement of a green manuring crop (known as dhaincha) to be given to farmers whose land quality had deteriorated due to excessive use of fertilisers.

In 2012, Rawat contested from the Raipur seat of Dehradun but lost. This was followed by another poll debacle when he lost the 2014 byelections from the Doiwala seat.

The 56-year-old leader's biggest political political break, according to BJP insiders, came when he was made the party's general secretary in 2013 and in the following year, came close to BJP national president Amit Shah who appointed him as deputy in charge of Uttar Pradesh for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The party's success in UP and Rawat's role in the victory was acknowledged by Shah and PM Modi who inducted him as national convener of the PM's pet project for Ganga cleanup, 'Namami Gange.' He was also made the in charge of Jharkhand for the 2014 state polls where the BJP formed a government.

Finally GOA in BJP GOAL

How Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari checkmated Congress to form BJP government in Goa

Highlight :
  • Amit Shah told me that we have to form the government (in Goa) and asked me to go to Goa immediately: Gadkari
  • 'I woke up Amit Shah at 5.15am and conveyed to him allies condition that they will support BJP only if Parrikar is made the CM'

Manohar Parrikar is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Goa today even as the Supreme Court ordered that a floor test be held on Thursday, March 16. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 5 pm today in Panaji. After days of hectic political developments, state Governor Mridula Sinha had appointed Parrikar as the CM. The move left Congress peeved and they had filed a petition against the decision in the Supreme Court. During an ‘urgent’ hearing, the apex court disposed the petition filed by the party, saying all issues raised in it can be resolved by simple direction of holding floor test. Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar, who had managed to pull off the coup and catapult BJP to such a position, is a multifaceted personality and one of the most admired politicos of India.

Women's Day Special

'Manage energy, not time, and work-life balance will follow'

Niveditha Viswanathan is VP of Business Development and Strategic Alliances at HealthifyMe. A Stanford graduate, her career has focussed on education, health tech and making people's lives better through technology. She started her career with McKinsey and has since worked with start-ups in India and US.

Being part of a hyper-growth startup ,HealthifyMe, means that most of my days are in a state of change and flux. At HealthifyMe, we are marching towards a common purpose of creating a healthier India. No small mission, that! A significant portion of my work life is unpredictable, very exciting and therefore correspondingly stressful. Very few days are comparable and predictable.

And in my career, I have met many women who are leading incredible organisations while chasing the elusive work-life balance. Now, I know the phrase is clichéd and very subjective. To me, it is more about reprioritising as life takes its course and career evolves. I think of it less about balancing a scale and more about managing to do justice to each role that we women undertake.

I started my career with McKinsey and in true consulting style, I have three guiding principles that have helped me manoeuver work and life.

1) Ruthless prioritisation : at home and at work. For the most part, it takes the same time to do unimportant tasks as it does to do important ones. My top goal, every week, is to have a clear idea of my to-do list, and to knock off 10-15% off the original list. Again, this refers to both work and personal tasks, knowing it is ok to say no to things that are not very crucial or consequential. This also focuses on productivity, ensuring that your time is being directed to only the most important activities.

2) Manage energy, not time: Today, technology, travel and connectedness ensures that we need to stretch ourselves and our work schedules. But within those demands, one of the things that I have found very helpful is to create space for 'sacred rituals', that define activities you enjoy with your partner, family and even colleagues. These could be as simple as a morning walk or a team coffee every other Friday. Rituals, like these, help bring strong identity to relationships and making time sacrosanct, while creating positive energy that is uplifting.

3) Communicate. And then some. Some of my women friends who are in leadership positions have constantly restated one advice - find trusted colleagues you can share your experiences and emotions with. And more importantly, trusting your partner and close family with what is happening at work. Creating this transparency lets your closed ones bring empathy and allows close colleagues and mentors support you at work.

Overall, trying to balance work and life takes active energy and effort. It is about balancing work, personal life and what women sometimes tend to overlook, our personal self. Taking time to routinely check in with your partner/family or taking a quick break to be close to nature are very effective. At the end of the day, it is more about realigning priorities - some days will be more work than play. But, as long as there are days of play, we'll be fine!
